巴洛克艺术短论文 Baroque Style

Recently, I read a text about the Baroque Style and knew a lot about it. Baroque style is the style dominating the art and architecture of Europe and certain European colonies in the Americans throughout the 1600s, and in some places until 1750. The term of baroque also defines periods in literature and music. Baroque had entered the terminology of art criticism as an epithet leveled against 17th-century art by the end of the 18th century. Many critics and writers regarded it as a strange style that they were even not sure about whether it is a rise or a decline from classic, because it’s a totally different art.

If we want to understand the Baroque Style well, we must start from learning its historical context. First, human awareness of the world was continuously expanding at that age, many scientific discoveries influenced art. Second, Religion also determined many aspects. The Counter Reformation of the Roman Catholic Church employed emotional, realistic, and dramatic art as a means of propagating the faith. In addition, political situation is also a point. The absolute monarchies of France and Spain prompted the creation of works.

After we know the background well, here come its characteristics. Baroque art is a sense of movement, energy, and tension. Its work often shows intense spirituality and realism. The intensity and immediacy of baroque art and its individualism and detail make it one of the most compelling periods of Western art.

In my opinion, it’s a kind of advancement, because artists of this time were concerned with the inner workings of the mind and attempted to portray the passions of the soul on the faces they painted and sculpted, which means that they were fleeing from old things.
