Part 1: Warming-up questions (8 minutes) 1.Questions for thought and discussion: Ask one student to give some examples of business signs and also the meaning of the signs. Part 2: New course Statement (120minutes) 1. Explain the new words and expressions of the text. 2. Introduction: All About Signs People use signs to convey certain information to the public. Signs might be a word, a figure, a symbol, or even a number; they can be quite specific, instructive, and regulative. There are traffic signs, business signs, public signs and other kinds of signs. The figure or symbol in a sign must be highly presumable and conclusive. Though they are basically concise, straightforward, and comprehensible, they are in no way to replace literal explanation, which is considered as an essential part of a sign. Business signs are important in modern business activities, coz they are trying to distinguish what they stand for through distinctive or unique images, and convey to the public an identity which differentiate one from another. We can see a lot of signs in factory, hotel, shopping mall, etc, most of them are thus designed attract customs or at least, draw their attention. So, in order to win popularity among the public, a business sign must be unique, original and conspicuous. 1.
