Thecriticalturnarrivedinthe eldofappliedlinguisticsinthelate1990sandearly2000s,andthe eldhassincewitnessedaburgeoningbodyofliteraturedrawingonavarietyofanalyticalframeworksandmethodologicalapproachesthatarelooselylabeledascriticaldiscourseanalysis(CDA).AmethodologicalreviewoftheroleofCDAinthe eldisthustimelybothtoprovidesignpostsforresearcherswishingtodrawonCDAmethodsinappliedlinguisticsresearchandtoprovidesometheoreticalandmethodologicalresourcestoevaluatetherapidlygrowingbodyofCDA-orientedappliedlinguisticsresearch.Unlikesomemethodologicaltools,suchascorpusanalytictoolsthatcanbeinsertedintoadiverserangeoftheoreticalframeworks(e.g.,positiviststudies,interpretivestudies,criticalstudies),CDAcannotbeapplieddivorcedfromitsparadigmatictheories,asitiscloselyrelatedtoaspeci csetofsocialtheoriesaboutthenatureoflanguage,literacy,identity,socialpractice,andthesocialworld.CDAmethodsthuscannotbeappliedwithoutalsoaconcomitantcommitmenttoCDA’stheoreticalorientations.Inthisreview,thetheoreticalcommitmentsaswellastheclassicmethodsofCDAwill rstbediscussedandthenthemajorareasinwhichCDAresearcherstypicallyconducttheirstudiesareoutlinedtogetherwithareviewofthevarietyofmethodologicalapproachesusedinthesedifferentareas.ThestrengthsaswellasthelimitationsoftheseapproacheswillbediscussedwithexamplesofrecentstudiesusingCDAinthe eldofappliedlinguistics.ThearticlewillconcludewithsomesuggestionsforfuturedirectionsofCDAmethodologicaldevelopment.
