Materials science has always been a focus of the modern society, because most fields in science and engineering are related in some way with materials and sometimes even relied on them. Therefore, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is considered as one of the fundamental and key components of the modern technology. Although I am a student major in electrical engineering, I become interested in MSE in my two years of research on the dielectric materials. I decided to pursue my Ph. D study in Materials Science to achieve my dream of becoming a world-class researcher.

My research experience began from one of my summer jobs, undergraduate research assistant at State Key Laboratory for Electrical Insulation and Power Equipment (SKLEIPE). The laboratory is a national lab located on Xi’an Jiaotong University campus. It is considered as the top lab in the field of electrical insulation and dielectric materials in China. When I first started working in the SKLEIPE in July 2004, I was assigned to assist Dr. Feng Junqiang and Xu Man to conduct investigations on the preparation and dielectric behavior characterization of polymer-based nanocomposites. The project was funded by the NSF of China. I was in charge of the synthesis of Ag nano-particles using ultraviolet irradiation and dispersion of the particles into the polymer matrix via in-situ polymerization. At the beginning, I never thought the synthesis process was an interesting job, because everyday I have to spend nearly 13 hours working in the lab where the temperature is about 40℃. However, this attitude changed when I first observed the Ag nano particles under the transmission electron microscope and the dielectric anomalies in the composites as theoretically predicted. Such positive results brought me great joy and brought up my interest in research. The tedious experiments seemed to be much more interesting as it was filled with hope. By then I started to read more technical publications concerning the unique properties of the metallic nanoparticles and become interested in discussing academic problems with other researchers. I made efforts to explain the dielectric anomalies of the nanocomposites. It is during this period that I learned a lot about research from Dr. Feng and started planning to pursue an academic career.

Getting more familiar with this research field, I met Prof. Dang Zhimin on his visit to our lab in September 2004. He was alumni of our department and a professor of the Department of MSE at Beijing Univeristy of Chemical Technology. He is a renowned scientist with large numbers of publications in world class research journals. After several conversations I found his research in the high-dielectric-constant composite really interesting and possessed broad potential applications. As he went back to Beijing, I started to read many related publications and gradually had many ideas of my own. At that time, the term an undergraduate research assistant for me ended, however, I decided to continue working in SKLEIPE because I had become really fond of it. With the support of Dr. Feng, I began to conduct experiments on my ideas. As the number of the publications I read increase, more and more ideas come into my mind ceaselessly.
