The White House stands in the centre of Washington D.C. People call it the American Treasure because it’s the American President’s house. It is a two-floor white house. There are five main rooms on the State Floor. The president and his family live upstairs. Different from others, it opens to the public for free.

President Washington, the first president of the USA, ordered people to build it in 1792. They completed it in 1800. The first owner of it was President John Adams, the second president of the USA. President Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth president of the USA, first called it White House in 1902. Do you know why?

The story goes back to 1812. That year Britain was at war with America. The British soldiers captured Washington, and some buildings including the President’s house got a fire. In 1814, in order to hide the marks of the fire, people painted the brown stone walls of the president’s house white and it stayed a real white house since then.
