Abstract
Weinvestigatethein uenceofthefullvacuumpolarizationandvertexfunc-
tiononthefermionpropagator,usingthecoupledDyson–Schwingerequations
forthephotonandfermionpropagator.Weshowthat,withinarangeofver-
texfunctions,thegeneralbehaviorofthefermionpropagatordoesnotdepend
ontheexactdetailsofthevertex,bothinthemasslessandinthemassive
phase.Independentoftheprecisevertexfunction,thereisacriticalnumberof
fermion avorsfordynamicalmassgenerationin(2+1)-dimensionalQED.A
consistenttreatmentofthevacuumpolarizationisessentialfortheseresults.
